Google Spoon helps people with tremors eat with a spoon that puts a damper on excessive motion.

Google is throwing its money, brain power and technology at the humble spoon. The Liftware spoon allows people with essential tremors and Parkinson’s Disease to eat without spilling. The technology senses shaking and makes instant adjustments.

The spoon was developed by Lift Labs, which was acquired by Google in September 2014. Currently the spoon costs $295. The anti-motion spoon is designed to counteract the tremor associated with medical conditions such as Parkinson’s disease or essential tremors (tremors of unknown cause). Lift Labs was founded by Anupam Pathak.

The project is part of the life sciences division of Google X is a research organization studying Life sciences.

In addition to the Liftware Spoon, projects include …

Google Contact Lens — a smart contact lens project announced by Google in January 2014. The project aims to support people with diabetes by constantly measuring the glucose levels in their tears.

The Baseline Study is a project to collect genetic and molecular information from enough people to create an understanding of a profile that includes the characteristics of a healthy human.

In October 2014, the life sciences division of Google X announced the development of an early disease-detecting nanoparticle platform that may involve people taking pills containing nanoparticles that will hunt down disease at an early stage. The early detection might involve cures or treatments with minimal methods compared to more drastic traditional methods when more damage is already done.
