New Ford F-150 with Aluminum Body Introduced in Detroit — 700 LBS Lighter

Brand new Ford F-150 being revealed at the 2014 Detroit auto show. Five trim levels will be offered when the 2015 Ford F-150 goes on sale later this year including the XL, XLT, Lariat, Platinum and King Ranch.

The 2015 Ford F-150 pickup truck is made of a military-grade aluminum alloy and high-strength steel and is 750 pounds lighter than existing trucks. Gas mileage is expected to increase from about 23 mpg highway to 30 mpg highway.

In the switch to aluminum, Ford is expected need about six weeks of downtime at each of its truck plants to retool and swap out robots and machinery and train personnel.

Ford F-150 pickups factories are located headquarters in Dearborn, Michigan and in in Claycomo, Missouri, which is about 300 miles southwest of an Alcoa plant in Davenport, Iowa. The Alcoa plant supplies super-strong aluminum to the defense industry and other grades for automakers.

The 2015 Ford F-150 will be available Fall 2014.
