Confronting another mass shooting: 13 confirmed dead in Navy Yard shooting. The shooter is included among the fatalities. The shooter has been identified as Aaron Alexis. According to the Pentagon, Alexis, who enlisted May 5, 2007, was a naval trainee at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center in North Chicago in 2007. Police until about 10:21 p.m. had not ruled out the possibility of an accomplice, but at 10:21 p.m. the DC Police Department (MPD) notified the public that the “Shelter in Place” recommendation had been lifted because police say they now believe that the shooter acted alone.

Police have not discovered a motive.
FIRST UPDATE at FIRST PRESS CONFERENCE:
MPD Shooter Response Team responded.
Four wounded and transported from the scene.
Isolated incident.
Residents asked to stay out of the area.

MPD deployed within seven minutes. Park Police and US Marshals also responded.
One MPD Officer shot.
The shooter is believed to be deceased. There are potentially two other shooters. (1) Possibly a white/male in a Khaki tan military uniform, wearing a beret — last seen with a handgun about 8:35 a.m. (2) A black male, about age 50, in possession of a long gun wearing an olive drab uniform.
A shooting took place at the yard at around 8:20 a.m EDT. At least three shots were fired at the headquarters for the Naval Sea Systems Command. A search for the male shooter at large with a shotgun or rifle is ongoing.
Park police aviation officers are assisting with the search.
There is early report of two victims — presumably gunshot victims. The 11th Street Bridge is designated as a triage area.
The shooting is reported to have occurred at about 8:20 a.m. on the fourth floor at the headquarters of the Naval Sea Systems Command on Isaac Hull Avenue on the grounds of the historic Navy Yard (Building 197). Building 197 houses the Naval Sea Systems Command.
The Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) is the largest of the U.S. Navy’s five “systems commands,” or materiel (military materials and equipment) organizations. NAVSEA consists of four shipyards, nine “warfare centers” (two undersea and seven surface), four major shipbuilding locations and the NAVSEA headquarters, located at the Washington Navy Yard, in Washington D.C.
Washington Navy Yard is about 1.6 miles from the U.S. Capitol.

The Washington Navy Yard currently serves as a ceremonial and administrative center for the U.S. Navy, home to the Chief of Naval Operations, and is headquarters for the Naval Sea Systems Command, Naval Historical Center, the Department of Naval History, the U.S. Navy Judge Advocate General’s Corps, Naval Reactors, Marine Corps Institute, the United States Navy Band, and other more classified facilities.
The next steps will be to ensure shooter was not working with others, says former FBI official Shawn Henry.
