Eyewitness accounts and new video footage suggests that a Spanish train that hurtled off the rails and smashed into a retainer wall as it rounded a bend may have been going twice the recommended speed.

A train crash in Santiago de Compostela in northwestern Spain Wednesday night killed at least 80 people and injured about 94 people.

Video footage from a security camera showed the train, with 247 people on board, hurtling into a concrete wall at the side of the train cars jack-knifed and the engine rolled over.

The 52-year-old train driver with 30 years of experience was driving. The eight-car train with 247 people on board left the tracks on a curve at 120 mph, but the speed limit on that curve was 80 mph.
