Police from multiple law enforcement agencies near West Bloomfield, Michigan responded about 12:30 p.m. Thursday, March 12, 2026 to a report of an active shooter and vehicle ramming at Temple Israel, 5725 Walnut Lake Road in West Bloomfield, Michigan. A fire was reported after the vehicle vs building crash.

UPDATE:

Offender: Mohamed Ghazali, age 41, a Lebanese-born US citizen and a restaurant worker at Hamido Restaurant (Middle Eastern restaurant), 25412 Ford Rd Dearborn Heights, Michigan, was identified as the offender who rammed his vehicle into the Temple Israel synagogue. Recently on March 5, 2026, a 2026 Lebanon war drone strike by the Israel Defense Forces in Ghazali’s hometown Machghara killed two of Ghazali’s brothers, one of their children, and the child of his sister-in-law. Mohamed Ghazali’s brothers were part of Hezbollah’s rocket unit. Ghazali was flagged on a US government watchlist for his contact with suspected Hezbollah members, but was not considered to be a member of Hezbollah (CBS News: Suspect in Michigan synagogue attack lost family in recent airstrike in Lebanon, sources say. Here’s what we know., NBC News: What we know about the car ramming attack on a Michigan synagogue, CNN: Michigan synagogue assailant had connections to Hezbollah members in Lebanon, sources say)

Mohamed Ghazali’s vehicle was used to transport explosives, block a hallway during a crash into the synagogue, and strike the director of security at the synagogue. The truck ignited with flames near the glove compartment, and additional Temple Israel security guards exchanged gunfire with Ghazali, as Ghazali committed suicide by shooting himself in the head (CBS News: Suspect in Michigan’s Temple Israel attack died from self-inflicted gunshot wound, FBI says).

The Directory of Security at Temple Israel was injured during the attack, according to a Facebook post on The Jewish Federation of Detroit official page on March 12, 2026 at 2:39 p.m.

Aerial video from a new helicopter showed gray and black smoke coming the building.

At a press conference at 1:35 p.m. ET, Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard and West Bloomfield Police Chief Dale Young reported that it appears at least one individual came to the Israel Temple synagogue, and that the facility security engaged him in gunfire, and that all necessary resources were on scene following the shooting of the suspect.

Besides the suspected shooter being a fatality, there were no other casualties reported. A security guard was injured when he was hit by the offender’s vehicle.

Bloomfield Township and West Bloomfield, Michigan, consists of a significant Jewish community with strong ties to Israel.
