Police, firefighters and paramedics from Arlington Heights responded about 9:00 a.m. Saturday, March 7, 2026 to a report of a fire in a restaurant at Raising Cane’s, 225 East Palatine Road Arlington Heights. Cooking oil from a fryer caught fire, but heroic restaurant employees responded properly and extinguished the fire with a handheld fire extinguisher. The fire was extinguished when firefighters arrived.
The fire occurred before the restaurant opened Saturday morning. The employees prevented any damage, and scrubbed the fryer clean before the scheduled opening at 10:00 a.m. Firefighters didn’t even need to ventilate the restaurant. The restaurant operated with normal business hours Saturday.
There were no injuries reported.
There was no smoke odor in the restaurant, and the tasty fried chicken fingers, crinkle cut fires and Texas toast were excellent as usual.
Deep fryer fires and accidents frequently cause serious injuries to employees, resulting in an average of 60 injuries and 5 deaths annually. Common injuries include severe burns, scalds, and infections, often caused by hot oil spills, equipment malfunctions, or, according to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
According to FDNY Smart, common causes of fryer fires are overheated oil, failing heating elements.
Over half of accidents involve burns or scalds, with risks highest during food insertion/removal or oil filtration.
Workers in fast-food restaurants are at a particularly high risk for these types of injuries.
To reduce risk, experts recommend using proper protective equipment (gloves, aprons), ensuring training, and maintaining strict safety procedures, according to the A.I.M. Mutual Insurance Companies.
