During late Winter, Spring, and Summer of 2026, motorists will likely experience serious delays at the interchange at Route 53 and Palatine Road near Arlington Heights and Palatine.
The Village of Arlington Heights announced on Thursday, March 5, 2026 that the municipality was notified that starting Friday, March 6, 2026 Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) is scheduled to close the following ramps at the Route 53/ Palatine Road interchange:
Eastbound Palatine Road to northbound Route 53
Cloverleaf ramp/southeast sector
Westbound Palatine Road to southbound Route 53
Cloverleaf ramp/northwest sector
Southbound Route 53 to eastbound Palatine Road
Cloverleaf ramp/southwest sector
Northbound Route 53 to westbound Palatine Road
Cloverleaf ramp/northeast
IDOT is estimating the closures will be in effect until late summer 2026.
The map that the village of Arlington Heights provided with the Facebook notice on Thursday, March 5, 2026 incorrectly states that “ALL RAMPS TO BE CLOSED FROM MARCH 6 TO AUGUST 1.” The village provided map is incorrect because all eight ramps are NOT closing; only the four circular “cloverleaf” ramps are closing.
Additionally, starting Monday March 9, 2026, Palatine Rd underneath Route 53 will be reduced to one-lane in each direction (west and east).
The planned lane reduction will be in effect until approximately August 1, 2026.
The village reminded reader that the Route 53 project is not a Village project, and all construction is completed through IDOT and their contractors.

CHICAGO (February 27, 2026) – The Illinois Department of Transportation announced today that a project to improve Illinois 53 from Lake Cook Road to Interstate 90 (Jane Addams Memorial Tollway) in Rolling Meadows, Palatine and Arlington Heights will resume, weather permitting, the week of March 2.
The project is scheduled to be completed in several stages. Milling and resurfacing were completed last year. This year’s work includes rehabilitating the following bridges: Kirchoff Road, Industrial Avenue, Northwest Highway (U.S. 14)/Union Pacific railroad and Palatine Road.
To accommodate the work, lane closures are scheduled to take place in both directions of Illinois 53 between Kirchoff and Rand roads (U.S. 12). The public also should expect lane shifts, with two lanes open in each direction, along with various ramp closures and overnight lane closures throughout construction.
The following Euclid Avenue ramps are closed until late April for pier demolition and construction:
Westbound Euclid Avenue to southbound Illinois 53. A detour will use Hicks and Kirchoff roads to connect to southbound Illinois 53.
Eastbound Euclid Avenue to northbound Illinois 53. A detour will use Algonquin Road (Illinois 62) to connect to northbound Illinois 53.
The following ramps at Palatine Road are scheduled to close Friday, March 6, and expected to reopen in late summer.
Eastbound Palatine Road to northbound Illinois 53.
Westbound Palatine Road to southbound Illinois 53.
Southbound Illinois 53 to eastbound Palatine Road.
Northbound Illinois 53 to westbound Palatine Road.
The northbound Illinois 53 ramp to Algonquin Road is scheduled to close Friday, March 13, until late summer.
Additional ramp and lane closures for varying durations will be required to complete the project. Schedules and impacts to traffic will be shared approaching the closure dates.
The overall $189 million project consists of reconstructing and resurfacing Illinois 53 from Interstate 90 (Jane Addams Memorial Tollway) to Lake Cook Road and modernizing traffic signals, along with lighting and drainage improvements. The project also is rehabilitating the following Illinois 53 bridges: Kirchoff Road, Industrial Avenue, Northwest Highway (U.S. 14)/Union Pacific railroad, Palatine Road, Anderson Drive, Rand Road (U.S. 12), Salt Creek and Algonquin Road.
The majority of the project is scheduled to be completed by the end of the year, with landscaping and miscellaneous work to be completed in spring 2027.
The public can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area. Alternate routes are encouraged. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to flaggers and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits and be on the alert for workers and equipment.
Over the next six years, IDOT is planning to improve 7,107 lane miles of highway and 8.4 million square feet of bridge deck as part of Gov. JB Pritzker’s Rebuild Illinois capital program, which is investing $33.2 billion into all modes of transportation. Accomplishments through Year Six of Rebuild Illinois include almost $20.8 billion of improvements statewide to 21,309 lane miles of highway, 815 bridges and 1,181 additional safety improvements.
