DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin and Oakbrook Terrace Chief of Police Casey Calvello announced Saturday, February 21, 2026 that Judge David Schwartz has granted the State’s motion to deny pre-trial release for a Wisconsin female adult suspect charged with shooting to death Obaidulla F. Shareef on February 4, 2026. Akrystal C-Woods, age 19, of Milwaukee, appeared in First Appearance Court Saturday morning charged with three counts of First Degree Murder. On February 7, 2026, DuPage County Circuit Court Judge Robert Walsh issued an arrest warrant for C-Woods. She was taken into custody without incident in Wisconsin and appeared in a Wisconsin Court on February 10, 2026, where she waived extradition. She was returned to DuPage County on February 19, 2026, to face the charges against her.

On Wednesday, February 4, 2026, officers with the Oakbrook Terrace police department responded to a call of a vehicle that had exited a parking garage near 2 Trans Am Plaza, at a high rate of speed, had gone over a grassy area and crashed into a parked vehicle in the parking lot across from the garage. Upon their arrival, officers located the vehicle and observed a man, later identified as Shareef, in the front driver’s seat with an apparent gunshot wound to his head. After attempting life-saving measures, Shareef was pronounced deceased at 6:22 p.m. Following an investigation, it is alleged that earlier that day, C-Woods, another woman and Shareef checked into a room at the Comfort Suites hotel located at 17W445 Roosevelt Road, Oakbrook Terrace. At some point in time that evening, Shareef left the hotel but returned the following morning. Shareef left the hotel room prior to 12:30 p.m. that afternoon, when the women checked out of the hotel. After the women checked out, they allegedly met up with Shareef to smoke marijuana in the parking garage located at 2 Trans Am Plaza. Once in the parking garage, Shareef entered the defendant’s car and that while in the defendant’s car, C-Woods allegedly grabbed Shareef’s cell phone and attempted to transfer money to herself from Shareef’s Cash App account. Shareef allegedly grabbed his cell phone away from C-Woods, returned to his car and drove away. Allegedly, the drivers of both vehicles, Shareef and C-Woods, drove to exit the parking garage and at some point in time when Shareef’s vehicle was stopped along the passenger side of C-Woods’ vehicle, C-Woods pulled out a gun, rolled down the front passenger side window of her car and fired the gun across the face of the front passenger seat occupant at Shareef, striking him in the head. Then C-Woods allegedly fled the scene.

“In DuPage County we have absolutely zero tolerance for any type of violent crime. The allegations that Ms. C-Woods shot a man in the head from her vehicle and then fled the State are outrageous and will be met with the full force of the law. “I commend the Oakbrook Terrace Police Department, DuPage MERIT and the Milwaukee Police Department for their outstanding collaborative efforts that led to the quick identification and apprehension of Ms. C-Woods for the murder of Obaidulla F. Shareef. Despite her best efforts to flee from authorities for her alleged actions, the work put in by these agencies ensured that Ms. C-Woods would return to DuPage County to face the murder charges against her. I offer my sincerest condolences to Obaidulla’s family and friends and wish them strength during this incredibly difficult time in their lives. Additionally, I thank the numerous law enforcement agencies whose assistance in this case was essential for us to file murder charges against Ms. C-Woods. I also thank Assistant State’s Attorneys Alexandria Levan, Kathleen Rowe, Anne Nyberg, Helen Kapas, Ken Tatarelis and Nicholas Covert for their work in securing charges against the defendant.”

— DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin

“Akrystal C-Woods’ appearance today marks the beginning of the judicial process. We remain committed to presenting the evidence thoroughly and ensuring justice for the victim and their family. This is a significant step in a very serious case. The Oakbrook Terrace Police Department has worked tirelessly to bring this matter before the court, and we will continue to support the prosecution as the case moves forward. Our thoughts remain with the victim’s loved ones. I thank State’s Attorney Bob Berlin and his team for their legal guidance on this case and for their continued support of law enforcement.”

— Oakbrook Terrace Chief of Police Casey Calvello

C-Wood’s next court appearance is scheduled for Monday, March 9, 2026, in front of Judge Margaret O’Connell.

Members of the public are reminded that this complaint contains only charges and is not proof of the defendant’s guilt. A defendant is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial in which it is the government’s burden to prove his or her guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
