A truck driver was seriously injured in a two-vehicle crash involving his gravel truck that rolled over when the driver of a silver SUV at Barrington Road and Dundee Road in Barrington apparently disobeyed a red light. Rescue involved a prolonged extrication operation for the seriously injured truck driver, who was trapped in the wreckage. The crash shut down the intersection for at least five hours Wednesday afternoon and evening.

Police, firefighters, and paramedics from Barrington Fire Department responded 2:32 p.m. Wednesday, October 8, 2025 to a report of a vehicle crash with injuries, and discovered a five-axle semi-truck including a gravel dump upside down and a silver Acura SUV off the road at the southeast corner of Barrington Road and Dundee Road in Inverness. The crash was in the intersection in Barrington, but the vehicles came rest after the crash in Inverness near the Inverness village sign.

The driver in the truck was trapped in the upside down red semi-truck cab. Firefighters found the truck driver still inside, severely injured, and actually trapped by the wreckage. Firefighters and paramedics from Hoffman Estates Fire Department and Inverness Fire Protection District were assigned to assist Barrington Fire Department with extrication. Rescuers extricated their patient by about 3:54 p.m. after an almost 90 minute extrication operation that also utilized a heavy duty rotator tow truck and crew from Whitey’s Towing in Crystal Lake. The rotator tow crew from Whitey’s Towing, Inc. facilitated an easier and safer extrication by slightly lifting the upside-down truck for better access to remove the truck driver.

A landing zone for a LifeNet medical helicopter was set up at about a one mile driving route from the crash scene at Ron Beese Park north of Barrington Middle School, Prairie Campus, where the truck driver was transferred from the scene and transitioned to air transport with the LifeNet crew. The truck driver was airlifted to Level 1 Trauma Center Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.

The driver of the Acura SUV was apparently not seriously injured.

Initial investigation indicates that the semi-truck driver was traveling eastbound on Dundee Road with a green light, when the driver of the Acura SUV was traveling northbound on Barrington Road, disregarded a red light, and attempted to turn right onto eastbound Dundee Road while the gravel truck and driver were approaching from the Acura driver’s left side.

The Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team (MCAT) conducted the on-scene investigation and reconstruction, and is continuing to assist the Barrington Police Department with the crash investigation.

Barrington Road reopened around 8:15 p.m. Wednesday, but eastbound Dundee Road was closed for a longer period while Ernie’s Wrecker Service removed the dump truck and cleared gravel and debris after the police investigation was completed.
