Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies have arrested a male adult from Cary, Illinois, who intentionally set a house on fire yesterday in unincorporated Round Lake. He occasionally rented the space above a detached garage on the same property.

On September 15, 2025, at approximately 2:30 p.m., Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a residence in the 35300 block of North Summit Place, unincorporated Round Lake, for a structure fire. Sheriff’s deputies arrived and found the home engulfed in flames. Area fire departments arrived moments later and began fighting the fire.

Lake County Sheriff’s telecommunicators obtained information from a 911 caller that someone was seen leaving the home with a can of gasoline, just prior to the home becoming engulfed in flames. Sheriff’s telecommunicators relayed the description of the possible offender to the deputies at the scene. This allowed deputies to quickly locate a man who matched the description of the person witnesses described. Further investigation revealed the man, Robert D. Neumann, 43, of the 300 block of Wooded Knoll Drive, Cary, was responsible for setting the fire.

Sheriff’s detectives determined Neumann has been renting space, above a detached garage at the property, to stay in from time to time. He was not allowed in the actual residence, only the detached garage. It appears Neumann poured gasoline at the rear of the home and set it on fire, for no apparent reason. Fortunately, nobody was inside the residence as it was only used as a weekend getaway home.

Two firefighters sustained minor injuries while battling the fire.

Sheriff’s detectives obtained and conducted a search warrant for the detached garage space being utilized by Neumann, where they recovered a nearly empty can of gasoline.

After reviewing the facts and circumstances of the investigation, the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office approved the following charges against Neumann:

Aggravated Arson (Class X Felony)

Residential Arson (Class 1 Felony)

Newmann remains held in the Lake County Jail pending an initial court hearing this morning.

All defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
