Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies and area firefighters and paramedics responded to Gages Lake around noon on Labor Day, Monday, September 1, 2025 to a report of a personal injury crash involving two personal watercrafts (PWCs).
Lake County Sheriff’s deputies arrived, discovered a rear-end type crash involving PWCs, and spoke to the occupants of both PWCs. A 21-year-old and his passenger — a 22-year-old Indiana woman — were injured in one PWC.
The two women used one of the PWCs to go back to shore. A Good Samaritan on a different boat transported both men to shore.
The 21-year-old male operator and his 22-year-old female passenger were transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
A 22-year-old male operator and a 21-year-old Indiana female passenger sustained minor injuries, but refused offers to be transported by paramedics to a hospital.
Preliminary investigation indicates that a 21-year-old Indiana man was operating a PWC next to his friend, a 22-year-old Indiana man, who was operating a separate PWC. The two were side-by-side when the 21-year-old pulled in front of the 22-year-old. The 21-year-old’s ‘no-wake-mode’ activated on his PWC, causing the PWC to rapidly slow. The 22-year-old was not able to slow or move to evade his PWC, and he struck the back of the 21-year-old’s PWC.
All four were visiting a friend who has a lake house on Gages Lake.
The Illinois Department of Natural Resources responded and is conducting further investigation.
