Police, firefighters, and paramedics responded about 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, August 27, 2025 to report of a mass shooting during first week of school Mass at the Annunciation Catholic School, 525 W 54th Street, Minneapolis. Initially the shooter’s identity was not released; but about four hours after the shooting, the shooter was identified as Robin Westman, formerly Robert Westman.
A lone shooter opened fire Wednesday morning while children sat in Mass at a Minneapolis Catholic grade school, killing two children and injuring 17 other people before killing himself, according to the Minneapolis Police Department.
Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said the shooter, who was armed with a rifle, a shotgun and a pistol approached the side of the church and shot with the rifle through the windows toward the children and worshippers sitting in the pews during Mass at the Annunciation Catholic School. The windows stained-glass windows. O’Hare said the worship service marked the first week of school for children attending the Annunciation Catholic School. The police chief described the act of cowardice, and a deliberate act of violence. Police immediately provided first aid and rescue at the scene, according to Police Chief Brian O’Hara
Local media reports that 50 to 100 shots were fired before the shooter committed suicide by a self-inflicted gunshot in a parking lot. Two children ages 8 and 10 were killed while they sat in the pews during the mass. Seventeen other people were injured — 14 children and three adults. Two children are listed in critical condition.
In addition to weapons recovered, a device described as a possible smoke grenade was recovered at the scene.
The school was evacuated, and students’ families were later directed to a “reunification zone” at the school. An all-clear alert was sent from the Minneapolis official X account at 9:29 a.m. CDT.
There is an active police situation at Annunciation Church, 509 W. 54th St. There is no active threat to the community at this time. The shooter is contained. Stay away from the area to allow emergency personnel to help victims – W. 54th Street between Lyndale and Nicollet Ave.

Initially, the identity of the shooter was not released by police, but police did release information that the shooter’s age was in his early 20s with no known criminal history.
The New York Post reported at 12:24 CDT, August 27, 2025 that police sources informed the New York Post that the shooter was identified as Robin Westman, and that a YouTube account was being investigated for a possible connection with the Annunciation Catholic School shooter. Also, according to KARE 11 (published 12:26 p.m. CDT), the Annunciation Catholic School shooter, identified as Robin Westman, was formerly known as Robert Westman, who grew up in Richfield, Minnesota, and whose mother was an employee at Annunciation Catholic School.

The Annunciation Catholic School shooting is the second mass shooting in Minneapolis within 48 hours, since a previous shooter on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, stepped out of a vehicle, killed one man and injured six individuals (five men and one woman) on a sidewalk behind the Cristo Rey Jesuit High School Twin Cities, and then fled in the vehicle. Catholic school Cristo Rey Jesuit High School Twin Cities, near Clinton Avenue and East 29th Street, is located about 3.9 miles north of Annunciation Catholic School.
Annunciation Catholic School, a pre-K to eighth grade, was founded in 1923. According to the National Center for Education Statistics for the 2023-24 school year, the school listed 391 students enrolled for the 2023-24 school year.
President Donald Trump and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz said in separate social media posts that they had been briefed on the shooting.
