The suspect in a hit-and-run crash last week that killed 15-year-old Nicholas Laureys of Crystal Lake on July 2, 2025, was found dead in a Woodstock home July 4, 2025. The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office said Monday, July 7, 2025 that during a Woodstock Police Department incident response July 4, 2025 for a death investigation, the suspect’s car was located. The mention of the finding of the suspect was not initially released by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office.
Today, McHenry County Sheriff’s Officer released information that a dead individual found at the scene where the vehicle connected with the fatal hit-and run was located on July 4, 2025, has been identified as the the suspect in the fatal hit-and-run crash. However, the identity of the suspect, the suspect’s gender, and the suspect’s age was not initially released in today’s update to the public. According to the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office, an investigation into the circumstances of the death is ongoing.
The dead suspect is indicated to have been behind the wheel of a vehicle that struck Nicholas Laureys from behind as Nicholas Laurys and a friend rode bicycles July 2, 2025 along Terra Cotta Road in unincorporated Crystal Lake.
According to the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office, police responded to a death investigation Friday night, July 4, 2025 at a residence in Woodstock, and that Woodstock police officers at the scene also located a vehicle matching the description of the vehicle involved in the July 2 crash. After further investigation, the deceased individual was identified as the suspect in the fatal hit-and-run crash, the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office reported Monday, July 7, 2025.
Woodstock police officers notified McHenry County Sheriff’s Office investigators, who determined that the vehicle was the suspected involved vehicle. The Woodstock Police Department and the McHenry County Coroner’s Office are investigating the cause and circumstances of the suspected driver’s death.
No one else is believed to be involved, and the McHenry County Sheriff’s office is not searching for additional suspects, according to the sheriff’s office.
The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office announced at 8:26 a.m. Saturday, July 5, 2025 that law enforcement had located a vehicle believed to be involved in a fatal hit-and-run vehicle vs bicycle crash that occurred on Terra Cotta Road near Deering Oaks Lane between East Hillside Road and Old Westbury Road in unincorporated Crystal Lake on Wednesday night, July 2, 2025. The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office did not initially indicate that a body had also been discovered. Instead, the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office stated, “At this time, there are no additional suspects and no charges have been filed.” The July 5 update led the public to assume that the search continued for the hit-and-run driver.
Nicholas Laureys, age 15, was killed as he rode his bike on the roadway near his family’s home in Crystal Lake Wednesday night about 9:34 p.m., July 2, 2025.

The driver of the vehicle allegedly fled the scene in a dark-colored reddish 2017-2018 Jeep Cherokee that police assessed to have been involved in the crash.
The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Major Crash Investigation Unit, the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office, and the McHenry County Coroner’s Office are assigned to the case.
The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office stated that the bicycle was being operated with an activated red taillight when the bicycle and Nicholas Laureys were struck. Nicholas was going to be a junior at Prairie Ridge High School in Crystal Lake during the upcoming school year 2025-26.
