Firefighters and a police officer responded about 11:46 a.m. Wednesday, July 26, 2023 to a report of a downed power line with “sparks” showing in the block of 1500 North Beverly Avenue. Firefighters secured the area while closing off Beverly Avenue between Thomas Street and Beverly Avenue in Arlington Heights.

Arlington Heights Fire Chief Lance Harris, who also responded to help secure the scene, said the arcing was almost continuous when he first arrived on the scene. After about ten minutes, the arcing occurred about once every three to five minutes. Fire Chief Harris also said he was surprised there weren’t additional calls caused by the thunderstorm that passed through the area. Winds were not too bad, but lightning was frequent during the storm. The National Weather Service at O’Hare International Airport reported a top gust of 25 MPH from the NW at 9:51 a.m. with a thunderstorm and heavy rain. The National Weather Service at Chicago Executive Airport did not report any gusts with winds that were only 10 MPH. Radar indicated severe thunderstorms in the area.

The National Weather Service began issuing Severe Thunderstorm Warnings for the area at 8:41 a.m. Most of the warnings expired by 9:45 a.m.

Initially, over 400 ComEd customers were without power. By around 1:20 p.m., ComEd isolated the power outage to about 300 customers. All power was restored by 4:00 p.m. Wednesday, but the exact time all customers were restored was not initially available. ComEd only stated that the cause of the downed power line was under investigation.

The arcing power line burned parts of two young pine trees and a small area of grass. No injuries were reported.
