Mundelein Man Dies in Crash at Route 45 and Peterson Road in Libertyville

Police, firefighters, and paramedics from Libertyville responded about 11:35 p.m. Sunday, May 7, 2023 to a report of a crash with injuries at Route 45 and Peterson Road in Libertyville. Officers arrived on the scene and reported one of the victims was trapped in their car and not breathing. The driver was extricated by the Libertyville Fire Department and transported to Level 1 Trauma Center Advocate Condell Medical Center where he was pronounced dead in the emergency room. Based on the severity of the incident the Major Crash Assistance Team (MCAT) of Lake County was called to the scene to investigate.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office was notified.

The deceased has been identified as 61-year-old Ezequiel Martinez, of Mundelein. On Monday, May 8, 2023, an autopsy was completed at the Lake County Coroner’s Office. Preliminary results indicate that Mr. Martinez died from blunt force injuries as a result of the crash.

The crash remains under investigation by the Libertyville Police Department, MCAT and the Lake County Coroner’s Office.

The intersection is wide with 7 lanes across. The Speed Limit on Route 45 north and south of the intersection is 45 MPH according to Google Maps Street View images captured September 2022.

The Speed Limit on Peterson Road is 50 MPH east of the intersection, 45 MPH west of the intersection, according to Google Maps Street View images captured October 2019..
