Des Plaines Police Department responded about 11:54 p.m. Thursday, August 4, 2022, at 11:54 p.m., the Walgreens at 1378 Miner Street in Des Plaines to a report of an armed robbery. The offender fled the scene prior to the officers’ arrival. The initial investigation revealed that the offender, entered the store, approached the cashier, indicated he had a gun, and demanded the money in the register. The cashier related to the offender that only the store manager had access to the register. At that time, the cashier advised the store manager of the situation, and the store manager accessed the register and turned over approximately $600 to the offender. Officers were able to obtain a description of the offender while on scene.

A short time after, on August 5, 2022, at 1:07 a.m., Des Plaines officers were dispatched to the BP gas station at 1530 Rand Road for a report of an attempted armed robbery with the offender’s description matching that of the offender in the armed robbery at Walgreens. Upon officers’ arrival, the offender was no longer at the scene. During the officers’ investigation, it was learned that the offender entered the gas station and demanded money from the clerk. The clerk advised that the manager removed the money from the register and picked up his phone to call the police. At that time, the offender exited the store and entered a black Toyota Sienna — a taxicab with Horizon Taxi written on the side of the vehicle in yellow writing.

The information received regarding the black Toyota Sienna taxicab prompted the Des Plaines Police Department to contact Horizon Taxi. The taxi dispatcher was able to put a Des Plaines dispatcher in communication with the driver of the taxi at the BP gas station at 1530 Rand Road. The driver related that he picked up a subject from an apartment building at 1348 Brown Street in Des Plaines and drove him to 9000 Greenwood Avenue in Niles at the Walgreens and then to 1530 Rand Road in Des Plaines at the BP gas station.

While Des Plaines police dispatch was speaking with Horizon Taxi, police learned that an additional taxi request from the residence at 1348 Brown Street was made at 1:30 a.m., with a destination of 1300 East Oakton Street at the Bank of America. Upon learning the latest taxi assignment, officers went to 1300 East Oakton Street. When Joseph Bailey arrived, he was taken into custody by Des Plaines police officers.

According to the Des Plaines Police Department, Joseph Bailey was positively identified as the offender in both incidents by witnesses at those locations. Des Plaines police investigators obtained a search warrant for Bailey’s residence. During the search of Bailey’s residence, investigators recovered two firearms with filed-off serial numbers, body armor, and clothing that matched the description of the clothing observed during the criminal incidents.

Bailey’s residence is about a 5-minute walk to the Walgreens at 1378 Miner Street.
