Arlington Heights police responded about 3:15 PM Thursday to a report of a retail theft suspect detained at Mariano’s, 802 East Northwest Highway Arlington Heights, IL. A retail theft suspect was caught by a Mariano’s employee with bottles of liquor concealed in his backpack, after a male suspect walked with an unidentified subject in the liquor department, and concealed bottles of liquor.
The subjects put four bottles of liquor in a backpack — one Knobb Creek Whiskey, two bottles of Skol Voda, and one bottle of Bulleit Bourbon. They put the products in Salzman’s backpack.
The retail value of the liquor was valued at $83.84.
The subject that fled was described as a male/white in his 50’s wearing a skullcap, dark jacket and blue jeans.
The retail suspect arrested was identified as Steven Salzman, 48, of the 0-99 block North Dryden in Arlington Heights.
Salzman was charged with felony theft after police contacted the Assistant DA for felony review and felony charge of retail theft. The suspect had previous charges of burglary.
While there was a struggle to detain Salzman, two bottles of the whiskey hit the floor and shattered. A folded pocket knife also fell onto the floor during the struggle, but it was not used in any threatening manner.
