Student Shot, Killed at Mount Tabor High School in Winston-Salem, North Carolina — Suspect at Large

Police, firefighters and paramedics from Winston-Salem North Carolina responded about 12:07 p.m. Wednesday, September 1, 2021 to a report of a shooting at Mount Tabor High School, 342 Petree Road in Winston-Salem. A school resource officer was on the scene and initially indicated that a student had been shot.




On arrival police discovered one injured student, and learned that the shooter was at large. Advanced Life Support measures were administered by paramedics, and the student was transported to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center affiliated with Wake Forest University. The student was pronounced dead at the medical center, and was identified as William Chavis Raynard Miller Jr.

All other students were safe, according to the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office.

Winston-Salem Police Department and the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office responded to the emergency, the sheriff’s office is taking the lead on the investigation. Additional police officers from adjacent cities and counties also responded to the scene.

Police blocked roads to the school, and parents were asked not to respond to the school.

ATF agents also responded to the scene.

In addition to Mount Tabor High School, nearby schools were placed on lockdown as a precaution. No other shootings or injuries had been reported. Police also responded to a theater in Winston-Salem, but it is unknown why police were at the theater.
