Following a pileup crash that began about 6:00 a.m. Thursday, February 11, 2021, I-35 remained closed late Thursday night for length of almost 10 miles. The stretch of I-35 north of Fort Worth is known as the North Tarrant Express.
The 35W interstate highway corridor through Fort Worth and Tarrant County is a major north/south route for local commuters, along with regional, interstate and international trade traffic. The newly reconstructed project features fully rebuilt main highway lanes and frontage roads, along with two new lanes known TEXpress “managed” Lanes in each direction. Some locals aren’t happy with the constant construction, multiple curves, concrete walls with no room to escape that one Texan described as a “human bowling alley.”
Ice is blamed for the crashes where the Speed Limit is posted at 75 MPH, and now investigation will turn to analysis of whether the interstate was treated properly to combat the icing effect. Traffic was moving in a downhill direction toward the West Fork Trinity River.
Six people were reported killed, 36 were injured and transported by ambulances, and another approximately 62 went to hospitals on their own.
The stretch of wreckage was about one mile in length.
