Gas Leak Buffalo Grove on Thompson Blvd Near Caren Dr Closes Thompson Blvd from Brandywyn Ln to Buffalo Grove Rd, Buffalo Grove

Police and firefighter/paramedics from Buffalo Grove responded about 10:19 a.m. Monday, August 17, 2020 to a report of a commercial gas in the block of 500 Thompson Boulevard near Caren Drive in Buffalo Grove. Thompson Boulevard was immediately closed between Brandywyn Lane and Buffalo Grove Road.

The Village of Buffalo Grove reported that a gas main at the western intersection of Ronnie and Thompson was struck and broken during roadway removal operations by the contractor. Firefighters, police officers and Nicor workers responded to the scene.




According the National Weather Service at O’Hare International Airport winds were initially from the North at 7 MPH about the time of the gas leak and shifted from the Northeast at 3 MPH and East 5 MPH by 12:51 p.m.

According the National Weather Service at Chicago Executive Airport winds were initially Variable at 3 MPH about the time of the gas leak and became calm at 11:52 a.m., and shifted from the Southeast at 5 MPH by 12:52 p.m.

The Village of Buffalo Grove also reported that police were directing traffic and residents to safety, which included evacuating some of the closest surrounding homes. Emergency services will work closely with those people affected by the gas leak to ensure their safety. Workers at both the Thompson/Brandywyn and Gail/Green Knolls projects needed to cease operations as a result of this gas leak, leaving Green Knolls and Thompson (from Brandywyn to Buffalo Grove Road completely closed to traffic.

Nicor was mobilized to repair the gas line as quick as possible, according to the Village of Buffalo Grove. The vast majority of the leak was declared stopped by 12:24 p.m. and was expected to be completely stopped by 1:00 p.m. Monday.

Firefighters from Glenview, Park Ridge, and Rolling Meadows stood by in Buffalo Grove fire stations until all Buffalo Grove fire crews left the scene by about 1:37 p.m.
