A Chicago police officer told CBS 2’s Dave Savini that Macy’s was ‘lost’ to looters.
Small groups of Chicago police officers were frequently isolated and at risk when rioters surround them, and police response teams in numbers were required rescue or reinforce on Saturday May 30, 2020. Traffic obstructions — sometimes caused by parked police vehicles —frequently delayed the response of reinforcements.
Some bridges were raised, but not until around 7:00 p.m. There was some confusion among police regarding what bridges were up, and what bridges were connected to enable police response teams.
Police vehicles were parked too close to unprotected hot zones and police windows were smashed, police vehicles were set on fire and tires were slashed.
Sunday the loop and downtown Chicago was locked down. Rioting is likely to move to the neighborhoods Sunday afternoon and Sunday night.

On Saturday May 30, 2020, dumpsters were rolled into the streets by rioters as cover barricades for the rioters. This marks a difference from the preparation for the NATO protests in 2012 when all small trash cans and dumpsters were removed from streets and alleys, so they couldn’t be used by rioters as defense barricades, fire containers, or weapons for human injury and criminal damage to property.
There were reports that some police officers didn’t have helmets prior to Saturday evening, even though rioters were throwing bricks, rocks and bottles at police officers. Police were told to immediately arrest any offender throwing projectiles. Early Saturday evening all police officers were advised to have their helmets with them, or come to their police station to get a helmet if they didn’t have one.
There are reports that no pepper ball non-lethal police weapons or LRAD were used. Tear gas was reported to have been used after 7:30 p.m. LRAD or Long Range Acoustic Device was seen on the streets in 2012 at the NATO protest in Chicago, however it is not believed to have been activated for crowd control. It was used for amplifying warning messages.
White vans were rented and used to deploy response teams to hot spots. Police did not appear to have these type of teams to the same extent as in 2012.
Also, during the NATO protests in 2012, garbage trucks and dump trucks were parked to block alleys and impede movement and riot activities of rioters.
Chicagoans and citizens across the United States woke up Sunday morning to discover Chicago a damaged and unrecognizable city following a chaotic night of arson, criminal damage and looting.
