Andrew Marton, age 16, of Palatine died Tuesday, April 21, 2020 at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital from injuries he suffered Saturday, April 18, 2020 in a motorbike crash with a tree.
Andrew Marton was driving the motorbike when the motorcycle left the roadway and struck a tree. Andrew Marton was wearing a helmet, but was unresponsive after the crash.
CPR was performed by his father until paramedics took over with Advanced Life Support. Palatine firefighter/paramedics then transported Andrew Marton to Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights. A medical transport helicopter transferred Andrew Marton to Level 1 Trauma Center Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, but he never regained consciousness, and was declared brain dead at 2:57 p.m. Tuesday, April 21, 2020.
Andrew Marton participated in golf and water polo, but his main sport was hockey. He played for the Palatine-Schaumburg District 211 team.
At 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 22, 2020, a ceremony was held by A Gift of Hope, the nonprofit group that provides organ and tissue donation services. Andrew had made the decision earlier in his life to be an organ donor. During the ceremony, the Gift of Hope flag was raised across Dempster Street, just north of Lutheran General Hospital in honor of Andrew’s lifesaving donations.
After Andrew Marton’s death, a GoFundMe page was established with a goal of $50,000 to help the Marton family with high medical expenses, including the cost of the medical helicopter transfer and emergency treatment at two hospitals.
