The homeowner where police and an Emergency Service Team (SWAT) from NIPAS surrounded his house on Evergreen Avenue just south of Waverly Road put out a valiant effort to defend his family and himself on Saturday April 4, 2020 at about 1:55 p.m. from two home intruders.

The homeowner shoved one offender out of the house and down the porch sidewalk, grabbed him by the neck and collar, and held him down with one hand while punching him with the other. The other offender never made it out of the house, and is dead. All the successful defensive moves by the homeowner were made immediately after he was caught off guard by the two intruders in his home. In his bare feet with his shorts falling down; he overpowered one offender. He defended himself while yelling for help from landscapers across the street and neighbors nearby.

A Ring video shows that while the homeowner grabbed the offender by the collar, the offender’s button down shirt was pulled down enough so that a dark T-Shirt with white letters across the chest was revealed underneath a button-down shirt.

When the suspect was finished taking a beating from the victim, he fled toward the street. He tripped over a curb, and fell to the middle of the street on Evergreen Avenue, just south of Waverly Road.

Apparently he eventually took off his button-downed shirt because he was later caught without the button-downed shirt.

The male/white offender apparently fled on foot eastbound, because within about 15 minutes he was spotted on Brighton Place south of Camelot Park. Waverly Road begins again in a nice quiet neighborhood just east of Arlington Heights Road, and eventually becomes Waverly Drive near Camelot Park. Waverly Drive is the south border of Camelot Park, and Brighton Place is the east border of Camelot Park.

The suspect, wearing a dark T-shirt with white letters across the chest, dark shoes with white soles, and no surgical mask was surrounded and captured by police near Camelot Park shortly after the crime on Evergreen Avenue and Waverly Road.

Late last night Arlington Heights police did not confirm that they had the second suspect in custody.

The other offender never made it out of the house, but police confirmed late Saturday night that a male was found deceased in the house. Police did not confirm whether the death was a suicide by the offender, or a homicide in self defense by a resident in the house.

Several neighbors reported to CARDINAL NEWS that the struggle was violent inside the house, and involved a severed finger (bitten off) — suffered by one of the offenders. The information was not confirmed by police.

Neighbors helped shelter residents from the house once they evacuated.

The hero homeowner, who forced the surviving offender out of the house, suffered an apparent superficial wound to the forearm, and was treated and released by Arlington Heights firefighter/paramedics.

Arlington Heights Police said they are investigating a complex case with the assistance of the Major Case Assistance Team (MCAT). The Cook County Medical Examiner this morning released the cause of death as ‘unknown’ and the name and age of the deceased male inside the house was not initially released.

Now police are investigating how the other offender died — death at the hands of the man defending his home, or suicide by a home invader faced with police and SWAT personnel surrounding the house.
