A coronavirus testing site in Chicago’s Dunning neighborhood is the first one open to the public, Chicago Fire officials say.

Coronavirus testing is now available to people with symptoms that are over age 60 at the former vehicle emissions testing site at 6959 West Forest Preserve Drive in Chicago’s Dunning neighborhood. The location is just northeast of the Harlem Irving Plaza shopping center.

When the test was performed for first responders and health professionals-only last week, vehicles entered on Forest Preserve Drive at Harlem Avenue. A long backup of vehicles formed a line northeastbound about 2,000 feet long along Forest Preserve Drive from Harlem Avenue to the entrance into the testing site.

Drivers’ temperatures were taken by Illinois National Guard personnel while drivers remained seated in their vehicles. Their foreheads were scanned for the temperature reading, and drivers were immediately instructed to roll their windows up. Their temperature readings were then written on their driver’s door windows, and they were instructed to proceed toward the testing area for the nasal swab.

As of Sunday March 29, 2020 at 6:00 p.m., the official Chicago Coronavirus Response Center website did not have specific information about the Dunning neighborhood testing center. The advise for people over 60 and/or people with an underlying medical condition like diabetes, cancer or heart disease was to contact “your doctor to determine if testing is needed.”

There was no advice on the page for people that do not have a doctor.

There was no official message on the official website, or the official Facebook or Twitter accounts for the Chicago Department of Public Health about the Dunning test being opened to the public. However, the Chicago Fire Department stated on Saturday morning March 28, 2020 that the testing facility at 6959 Forest Preserve Drive was now accepting people over the age of 60 who have symptoms of COVID-19 for testing. First responders and health care professional were also still being tested, according to the Chicago Fire Department.
