Students were also advised to bring all materials home with them today (Friday, March 13, 2020). The students were instructed to bring home all materials they may need to successfully complete e-learning coursework in the event we are unable to hold face-to-face class instruction immediately following spring break. Letter to District 214 Community

MARCH 13, 2020 10:35 AM
Dear Parents & Guardians,

I trust this note finds you and your families doing well. We are in historic times right now as we address the COVID-19 virus and we wanted to provide you an update regarding the status of school for the near future as the situation continues to evolve in Illinois.

During Governor Pritzker’s latest press conference yesterday, he specifically noted the need to limit social contact and refrain from events with more than 1,000 people. We also know that several confirmed cases of COVID-19 have been treated at Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights.

Yesterday we announced the cancellation of co-curricular activities, field trips and tours. Feedback from the community has been mostly positive to that decision. While students are not currently being significantly impacted in most cases by COVID-19, there is a major concern with “community spread.” Mitigating the spread of COVID-19 must be our collective primary medical goal, while recognizing that some spread will likely continue to occur. However, as the Governor noted in his press conference, stretching that spread out over a longer period of time will allow our medical systems and providers the time they need to adequately address each patient rather than our medical professionals being swamped with a flurry of cases at the same time.

As a result of the aforementioned, out of an abundance of caution and in consultation with medical professionals and area school district leaders, we have made the decision to cancel classes for students for the week of March 16. Monday, March 16 will be an Institute Day for all staff. That will be followed by the use of the District’s four emergency days, Tuesday – Friday, where all D214 schools will be closed. It would be our intent for schools to reopen to students after spring break on Monday, March 30.

Students should bring all materials home with them today that they may need to successfully complete e-learning coursework in the event we are unable to hold face-to-face class instruction immediately following spring break.

We hope that this preventative measure flattens the curve and aids in the mitigation of the spread of COVID-19 in our local community. We will continue to keep you updated and informed as the situation evolves.

Sincerely,

David R. Schuler, Ph.D.
Superintendent
