Police and firefighter/paramedics from Gurnee responded about 4:50 p.m. Thursday, March 5, 2020 to a report of a serious crash at Washington Street and Cemetery Road. Gurnee police officers and Gurnee firefighter/paramedics arrived and located a 2002 GMC Envoy and a 2013 Toyota Sienna crashed with extensive damage.
The driver of the GMC was transported by Gurnee Fire to a nearby hospital for his injuries. The passenger in the GMC Envoy was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver and sole occupant of the Toyota Sienna, a 37-year-old female from Grayslake, Illinois, was transported to a nearby hospital for the injuries she sustained.
The initial investigation shows the GMC had two occupants, a 71-year-old male driver, and a 69-year-old female passenger from Lake Villa, Illinois. The GMC was traveling eastbound on Washington Street, east of Cemetery Road, when it crossed the center lane and collided with the Toyota traveling westbound on Washington Street. The head-on collision caused extensive damage to both vehicles.
Lake County Sheriff’s Traffic Crash Investigators and the Lake County Coroner’s Office responded to the scene. An autopsy has been scheduled for the deceased. An ongoing crash investigation remains underway with the Gurnee Police, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Major Crash Investigation Unit and the Lake County Coroner’s Office.
The Speed Limit on Washington Street is 45 MPH, according to Google maps street view from August 2019. The crash scene was located less than one mile west of Six Flags Great America.
