A Cook County corrections inmate jailed this week was found dead about 1:53 a.m. Saturday February 1, 2020 in his cell at Cook County Jail, 2700 South California Avenue in Chicago. Pedro Ruiz, age 19, was being held at Cook County Jail on an attempted murder charge and aggravated battery charge. He was found unresponsive with apparent head trauma, according to the Cook County sheriff’s office.
Correctional officers found Pedro Ruiz unresponsive in his cell and immediately “began lifesaving measures,” according to a statement from the sheriff’s office. Pedro Ruiz was transported to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The victim’s cellmate was put in handcuffs, which is standard procedure during an investigation, according to the Cook County Sheriff’s Office.
Initially, no charges were filed, and the Cook County Sheriff’s Office said they were conducting a death investigation pending a ruling by the Cook County medical examiner’s office on the cause and manner of the death of Pedro Ruiz, who was accused of shooting a 21-year-old man. The shooting occurred about 11:15 p.m. Tuesday January 28, 2020 outside a store in the block of 1800 West 47th Street in Chicago following an argument inside the store. The 21-year-old shooting victim was transported to Level 1 Trauma Center Cook County Stroger Hospital, where he was listed in serious condition.
Pedro Ruiz, 19, was ordered held without bail on Friday, January 31, 2020 on charges of Attempted Murder and Aggravated Battery with a firearm in connection with the shooting that was located in Back of the Yards neighborhood.
