Police and firefighter/paramedics from Niles responded about 12:08 a.m. Wednesday, January 29, 2020 to a report of a serious crash at the police department property at 7000 West Touhy Avenue, Niles. The crash was actually closer to Waukegan Road and Milwaukee Avenue.

Police and firefighter/paramedics on arrival discovered a crashed vehicle upside down at the underground parking garage with a victim inside. A short distance away there were power lines down from the initial part of the crash near Waukegan Road, and ComEd was request to respond to the scene. The crash also caused a power outage in the area.

Niles firefighter/paramedics extricated the driver by about 12:22 a.m. but the driver was pronounced dead at the scene. A silver vehicle remained upside down through the morning hours during an extended crash investigation.

Niles police initially released that a 22-year-old Des Plaines man was killed in the crash that involved the Niles Police Department garage. Niles police said the crash happened just after midnight, and that the male driver of a 2010 Hyundai sedan was speeding south on Waukegan Road approaching Milwaukee Avenue. The intersection is a ‘Y’ intersection where Waukegan Road does not continue south or west of Milwaukee Avenue. Instead the Niles Police Department property is directly in line with the area where Waukegan Road ends.

The driver apparently was unable to make a left turn onto southbound Milwaukee Avenue, struck a traffic signal, hit the curb, struck a ComEd utility pole which brought down power lines, smashed through a fence, and crashed into the underground exit door for the police department garage. At some point in the series of impacts the silver Hyundai sedan flipped upside down.

The vehicle came to rest inside the garage and the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police officials said there were multiple reports of reckless driving prior to the crash — specifically that the driver of a vehicle was traveling through the suburb of Morton Grove, which is just northeast of Niles, at a high rate of speed while disregarding traffic signals.

Milwaukee Avenue was closed down between Harlem Avenue and Touhy Avenue, and remained closed for much of the morning rush hour. The Speed Limit on Milwaukee Avenue is 35 MPH, according to Google Maps Street View September 2018. The Speed Limit on Waukegan Road is 35 MPH, according to Google Maps Street View November 2018.

The crash is under investigation after the initial on-scene investigation. Police re-opened all lanes of roadways in the area just before 9:00 a.m.
