Naval Station Great Lakes in Lake County on Lock Down for Possible Threat After Gate Runner Reported

The Naval Station Great Lakes put out an alert at 7:20 a.m. Friday January 24, 2020, reporting they were looking for a gate runner. All personnel were ordered on lockdown and to take cover in the nearest building or structure and await instruction. All gates were closed.

A witness also reported a car fire incident occurred just outside the base this morning, and a witness reported hearing an explosion and smelling smoke. Initially, there was not official information on a vehicle car, and it was unknown whether any of these reports were connected to each other.

The Commander, Navy Region Mid-Atlantic advised that “all, the information we have at this time is this is NOT a drill and we are treating this as a real world threat. Please follow the instructions of Navy Security Forces if prompted. Please wait for an official update from NS Great Lakes.”

The Commander, Navy Region Mid-Atlantic (CNRMA) is the regional coordinator for all shore-based naval personnel and shore activities in the Mid-Atlantic region, which encompasses 20 states, 14 installations, and 50 Naval Operational Support Centers (NOSCs).

Naval Station Great Lakes on their official Facebook page reported that at 7:09 a.m. this morning, Naval Security Force reacted to a minor situation involving an unauthorized entry onto Naval Station Great Lakes. Naval security Force is responding to the situation.

Naval Station Great Lakes is currently on lockdown.

No one was harmed and no property was damaged.
