Winter Storm Isaiah: Saturday Sleet and Ice, Strong Winds, Then 3.7 Inches of Snow in Period from Friday 4PM to Sunday 2AM

The peak wind gusts period with winds from the northwest arrived a little earlier than forecast. A peak wind gust of 52 MPH was recorded in the 6AM hour, and wind gusts stepped up into the 40+ MPH range in the 4AM hour period. Police and fire personnel have discovered or been assigned to downed tree limbs, arcing power lines, and transformer fires. An Arlington Heights police discovered a downed tree limb across Euclid Avenue just west of Rand Road about 6:15 a.m.

According to ComEd — reporting outages in our Chicagoland ComEd area at 9:10 a.m. — there are 273 outages affecting 7,067 customers out of 4,012,472 customers served. At 9:10 a.m. Arlington Heights had one area outage caused by downed trees or limbs that was affecting fewer than five customers near Harvard Avenue and Sigwalt Street. The incident was cleared by 9:22 a.m.

The snow higher totals forecast has shifted east, bringing the forecast total for Arlington Heights and neighboring communities up to 3.7 inches instead of yesterday’s 3.4 inches. The onset of sleet, freezing rain, and snow is forecast about the same, but some forecasts for area of Chicagoland have shifted to slightly later arrivals for the winter storm known as Winter Storm Isaiah.

Temperature falling to around 30 by 5pm. Windy, with a north northeast wind 25 to 30 mph, with gusts as high as 45 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. Total daytime ice accumulation of less than a 0.1 of an inch possible. Total daytime snow and sleet accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

Tonight: Snow, mainly before 1am. The snow could be heavy at times. Patchy blowing snow before 10pm. Low around 20. Blustery, with a northwest wind 20 to 25 mph decreasing to 10 to 15 mph after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 40 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. SUNDAY…

* WHAT…Periodic rain is likely to change over to a wintry mix,
mainly light but potentially including ice, across the northwest
part of the county this morning. This mixed precipitation will
spread gradually southward across the county this afternoon.
Total ice accumulations of less than one tenth of an inch are
possible, with some light sleet accumulation also possible. A
transition to snow, possibly briefly heavy, is expected late
this afternoon or early this evening. Total snow accumulations
of 2 to 5 inches are forecast, highest in the northern portion
of the county. Northeast winds will gust as high as 50 mph near
the lake and 40 to 45 mph inland. These winds combined with the
winter precipitation may cause further impacts, especially
reduced visibility in snow late this afternoon and evening.
