Jimmy Garoppolo’s First NFL Playoff Game As Starter; It’s Staying Cool Under Pressure vs Vikings Pass Rush Threat

Today’s San Francisco 49ers game against the Minnesota Vikings is Jimmy Garoppolo’s first playoff game as a starting quarterback. He suited up as backup quarterback behind Tom Brady in the Deflate Punishment season after Brady was suspended the first four games of the season. That was Garoppolo’s second season in the NFL as a quarterback for the New England Patriots. His first season in 2016 he saw a little action as a relief quarterback. In the Deflategate 2016 season he was chosen as starting quarterback, and led New England to a victory over the Arizona Cardinals. Garoppolo wasn’t able finish his 4-game assignment as starter because a bad hit by Miami Dolphins’ linebacker Kiko Alonso sidelined Garoppolo with a sprained AC joint. The shoulder injury kept him off the field until Brady was able to return from his suspension.

San Francisco 49ers Head Coach Kyle Shanahan in his third season as head coach with the 49ers says every game the last month or more of the regular season has felt like a playoff game to Garoppolo.

According to Matt Maiocco, NBCSports, Shanahan’s advice this week to Garoppolo: “Just be you. Do the same thing you do every single day.”

The Vikings’ pass rush and their ability to generate turnovers in their defensive backfield are a certain threat, but Garoppolo’s history of handling pressure might not make it so easy for the Vikings.

Today is the first playoff game in the San Francisco 49ers new Levi’s Stadium starting at 3:30 p.m. CT on NBC.
