Fatal Medical Emergency Caused Crash Involving Off-Duty Cook County Sheriff’s Police Sergeant on Dundee Ave, Elgin

An off-duty Cook County sheriff’s police sergeant died in a car crash Sunday in Elgin, authorities said.

Elgin police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 4:29 p.m. Sunday January 5, 2020 to a one-vehicle crash in the block of 1100 Dundee Avenue in Elgin.

Police and firefighter/paramedics on arrival discovered an off-duty Cook County Sheriff’s police sergeant suffered a fatal medical emergency before the crash.

“The preliminary investigation indicates that the vehicle drove southbound across northbound lanes, striking a utility pole and ultimately coming to rest in the 1100 block of Dundee Avenue,” according to the Cook County Sheriff’s Office.

A passenger in the vehicle was uninjured, but the driver was transported to Advocate Sherman Hospital in Elgin, where he was pronounced dead. Cook County Sheriff’s police sergeant’s identity was not initially released, but his age was released as 49 years-old.
