VICTIM’S BODY AT CRIME SCENE ALMOST 72 HOURS BEFORE DISCOVERY

Des Plaines Police Department homicide investigation scene at Oakton Street and Maple Street in Des Plaines.

Gerard Merced Delgado Calderon, a 31-year-old male suspect from Rosemont, has been charged in the strangulation death of a 24-year-old woman found Tuesday, December 31, 2019. Her body was found in a cardboard box near a trash dumpster in a parking lot near Oakton Street and Maple Street in Des Plaines.

Des Plaines police said Friday night December January 3, 2019 that Gerard Merced Delgado Calderon, of the block of 9400 Maple Avenue in Rosemont, was taken into custody on Thursday January 2, 2019 accused of the murder of Myra Rivera, of Rockford. He was charged with one count of first-degree murder in the death of Myra Rivera, and concealment of a homicide.

Rockford police were investigating a missing person case for Myra Rivera several days before the discovery of her body, according to Des Plaines Police Department. Two other people were arrested with Calderon; but were found to have unknowingly participated in the crime by lending Calderon a 2004 Acura TL, or by helping him put the box containing Rivera’s body in the vehicle, according to Des Plaines Police Department.

Police discovered the involvement of the 2004 Acura TL by canvassing the neighborhood and by retrieving neighborhood video surveillance. Through the identification of the vehicle, police were able to find the owner, and find the occupant of the vehicle when the vehicle was used to deliver Rivera’s body enclosed in a box near Maple Street and Oakton Street. The body was allegedly dumped inside a box near a dumpster at the northwest corner of Maple Street and Oakton Street in Des Plaines.

Calderon said he had contacted Rivera through an escort service website and eventually met up with her in the early morning hours of December 28, 2019. In his apartment on Maple Avenue in Rosemont, Calderon and Rivera had an argument that turned physical, and Calderon strangled Rivera, according to the Des Plaines Police Department. Police also collected evidence at Calderon’s apartment on Maple Avenue in Rosemont.

Rivera’s body was discovered about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, December 31, 2019 by a resident who was picking garbage in the northwest corner of the parking lot of a 2-story apartment over vacant medical offices building at 1578 Maple Street, just north of Oakton Street and just south of Lincoln Avenue. Police said the box containing the victim’s body had been left there about 4:45 p.m. December 28, 2019.

The case involved a few strange coincidences. The suspect lives on Maple Avenue in Rosemont, and Myra Rivera’s body was dumped at a parking lot on Maple Street in Des Plaines. Also, a registered sex offender and convicted murderer has a last known address at the same property where Myra Rivera’s body was found. The convict — not connected to the Myra Rivera case — committed murder of a 16 year-old Schaumburg girl by strangulation in July 1990 and was released from prison in 2006.
