Shooter at Naval Air Station Pensacola Was Saudi Arabia National; 6 Other Saudi Nationals in Custody

The president expresses condolences for the deadly shooting at a Florida naval air station that took several victims earlier Friday. The shooter, a member of Saudi Arabia’s military, was killed by officers responding to the scene.

The shooter at Naval Air Station Pensacola in Florida on Friday December 6, 2019 was a second lieutenant in the Saudi Arabian military involved in flight training in Pensacola, according to US Secretary of Defense Mark Esper said Friday.

The shooter and three other people were killed in the shooting. Eight other people were injured and transported to a hospital. Among the eight wounded, two were Escambia County Sheriff’s Deputies who responded to the scene.

Officials are analyzing the incident to confirm whether the shooting was terror-related as a possible motive.

“I also talked about our team looking at the measures we have in place to ensure proper vetting and screening of foreign students as they come to our country to make sure we understand we have a good handle on who they are and that they’ve been properly screened.”

The shooter, who was killed, has been identified as Saudi Arabian national Mohammed Alshamrani.

Alshamrani started his training in August 2017 as part of a three-year program, and was enrolled in classes in basic aviation, initial pilot training and English, according to a spokesperson for the assistant to the Secretary of Defense.

Six other Saudi nationals at the Naval Air Station were taken into custody for questioning. Three of the six Saudi nationals were seen taking cellphone videos of the incident.

According to Rita Katz, Director of SITE Intelligence Group, a Tweet by shooter Alshamrani suggested a terrorist motive. Alshamrani tweeted, ”The security is a shared destiny…You will not be safe until we live it as reality in [Palestine], and American troops get out of our land.”

The second of Alshamrani’s most recent tweets (just before his will) was a retweet of Trump’s December 2017 Jerusalem speech, made sometime in the last 48 hours, according to Rita Katz. The Pensacola shooter’s account Twitter account was created in 2012 and included over 2,700 tweets.

Florida Senator and former governor Rick Scott called for a full review of the US military programs to train foreign nationals on American soil. We shouldn’t be providing military training to people who wish us harm.
