Man dies in industrial accident at EMJ Metals in Schaumburg, Illinois.
A Crystal Lake man died Thursday in the 10 o’clock hour while working at a Schaumburg steel supply company. The man’s identity was released by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office as Adrian Gomez, age 26. Gomez was pronounced dead at 10:40 a.m. at Earle M. Jorgensen Co., also known as EMJ Metals, 1900 Mitchell Drive Boulevard in Schaumburg.
Schaumburg police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 10:09 a.m. to the “Jorgensen Steel” company at 1900 Mitchell Boulevard to a report of a person trapped in a machine. Schaumburg Fire Department responded with extra crews. The fire department’s special rescue “Squad 55A” was driven into the steel company factory to bring special rescue tools close to the scene. Firefighter/paramedics on scene confirmed a person was trapped, and reported they were working on extrication. Firefighters immediately worked to turn off the power to a machine in the steel processing factory.
Schaumburg police immediately began a death investigation. The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is also investigating the fatal industrial accident. OSHA is an agency of the United States Department of Labor that works to “assure safe and healthy working conditions for working men and women by setting and enforcing standards and by providing training, outreach, education and assistance” according to the mission statement. OSHA provides volumes of publications on work safety and the safeguarding of hazardous machinery. OSHA is also charged with enforcing a variety of whistleblower statutes and regulations.
The Schaumburg Police Department forensics van was on the scene. Firefighter/paramedics left the scene just after 12:05 p.m. Police left the scene about 1:27 p.m., and a van from a funeral home also left the scene about 1:27 p.m.
According to the Jorgensen Steel website, EMJ is a leading supplier of Steel and Aluminum Bar, and Tubing. The company also supplies Plate to manufacturing companies in North America and around the world.
A worker at a nearby business said there are wonderful people that work at “Jorgensen Steel” … adding that he knew the company had a high regard for safety at the workplace.
