Toyoda Americas Corporation groundbreaking ceremony for solar panels energy system installation August 23 2019.
Did you know there is a gem of a company on the north side of Arlington Heights on University Drive? The company known as Toyoda Americas Corporation holds the namesake Toyoda family name involved in the creation of the famous automobile manufacturer, Toyota Motor Corporation.
Recently Toyoda Americas Corporation, located at University Drive and Campus Drive, announced they are bringing a very important future to Arlington Heights — the implementation of a solar energy facility to energize their operations and manufacturing processes.
But first some important history …
The famous automobile manufacturer “Toyota Motor Company” was established as an independent company in 1937 from the original family business — Toyoda Automatic Loom Works (founded in 1926), which is the original family company name for the Japanese machine maker now known as Toyota Industries Corporation. Toyota vehicles were originally sold under the name “Toyoda” from the family name of the company’s founder, Kiichirō Toyoda.
The production of “Toyoda” automobiles, now known as the famous Toyota automobiles, was actually started in 1933 as the division of Toyoda Automatic Loom Works, a textile machine company founded by Sakichi Toyoda. The new automobile division was devoted to the production of automobiles under the direction of the founder’s son, Kiichirō Toyoda.
Toyoda is referred to as the “King of Japanese Inventors”.
Part of a family of companies also created was Toyoda Americas Corporation, which was founded in 1941 as a separate, independent body from the Machine Tools Division of Toyota Motor Corporation. Currently, precision manufacturing machines made at Toyoda Americas Corporation in Arlington Heights are used in major automobile manufacturing plants, major aircraft manufacturing plants, and smaller manufacturing businesses around the world.
JTEKT was formed in 2006 from a merger involving Toyoda Americas Corporation — actually the merger of two Japanese companies with a long-time presence in North America. The merger combined the steering and bearing expertise of Koyo Seiko (operating in North America since 1958), and the machine and driveline expertise of Toyoda Americas Corporation, operating in North America since 1977, and currently operating with headquarters at 316 West University Drive in Arlington Heights since 1987.
On August 23, 2019 Toyoda Americas Corporation hosted a groundbreaking ceremony for the installation of 5,040 individual solar panels on 28,328 square meters of unused land owned by Toyoda Americas Corporation to the west of their manufacturing plant and headquarters on University Drive.
The solar panel system will be able to output 2.3 million megawatt-hours of power contributing to a yearly carbon dioxide offset of 1,819 tons, and a coal offset of 2 million tons per year.
JTEKT TOYODA AMERICAS CORPORATION MACHINE WORKS provides large precision tool machines, aftermarket support service, machine re-manufacturing and engineering service at the Arlington Heights headquarters.
Speakers at the groundbreaking ceremony included Howard Michael, President and COO of JTEKT Toyoda Americas; Thomas Hayes, Mayor of Arlington Heights; and Eric Peterman, President of GRNE Solar, located in Palatine, Illinois.
GRNE Solar is a Solar Energy company that provides a solar installation team that includes consultants, engineers, project managers, electricians, and solar installers for residential, commercial, government, agricultural, and utility-scale projects. GRNE Solar will be working on the installation and service for the project this Fall.
Dignitaries present at the groundbreaking ceremony included Illinois State Senator Julie Morrison; Illinois State Senator Ann Gillespie; Illinois State Representative Mark Walker; ComEd Director of Large Customer Service Bruce Davis, and Village Board Trustees from the Village of Arlington Heights.
