How Technology Is Helping to Improve Traffic and Driving

#ad▼

V2I technology is changing our driving experience by making it safer and quicker. Learn how technology is helping to improve traffic in modern cities.

Most drivers are experiencing how technology is helping to improve traffic without even knowing it. Communication between devices has been helping us navigate roads and highways for several years. Older GPS technology relied on satellite information to create maps, but current traffic information is peer-to-peer. Apps such as Waze use live data from other Waze users to give an accurate depiction of traffic patterns—imagine someone five miles ahead of you signaling you to get off the interstate sooner because of an accident.

Communication between vehicles and devices has taken another leap with V2I technology. Vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) is the next generation of technology helping to make driving safer and more efficient. Newer cars are coming off the lot with the ability to communicate with traffic infrastructure devices such as stoplights. With the help of businesses outside the automotive industry, V2I technologies also help to improve traffic by wirelessly collecting vehicle-generated data from the infrastructure devices and relaying that information to other vehicles. For example, Antaira Technologies gathers traffic data in real time to monitor city intersections. Other types of gathered information can include hazard advisories, changes in safety conditions, or environmental conditions.

These companies, as well as state and local agencies, are substantially investing in improving their ITS equipment to make advancements in industrial networking in order to improve the efficiency of this technology. Some studies estimate that V2I technologies are currently in use in over 2,000 intersections in the U.S. Cities such as Chicago, Portland, Phoenix, Kansas City, Dallas, Houston, Palo Alto, and Washington, D.C. are leading the way with V2I technology.

Automakers such as Audi are also currently using technologies that use geographic mapping data to suggest the best time to lift off the gas pedal when approaching a traffic light. This can make your trips through town more fuel-efficient. Many people believe the same technology will soon use this data to improve traffic patterns and driver awareness.
