Shooter Is Dead: 5 Reported Killed, 21 Shot in Incident that Started with Traffic Stop

Odessa Police Department reported at 4:20 p.m. CT Saturday August 31, 2019 that there are multiple gunshot victims from an active shooter incident on open highways in west Texas near Odessa and Midland. A suspect was shot and killed by police. Midland and Odessa are located in the Central Time Zone.

UPDATE: 7 people have died in west Texas after a shooter fired randomly while traveling in a vehicle.

The shooting began at the traffic stop at about 3:25 p.m. CT, and the shooter was killed at about 4:17 PM CT. There are multiple shooting scenes in need of investigative processing in northeast Odessa.

Police say an offender hijacked a U.S. mail carrier truck and began driving around Odessa shooting randomly at people. The suspect was last seen in the area of 38th and Walnut.

During part of the initial police response, the possibility of two active shooters was considered. By 6:00 p.m. CT local police concluded they had shot and killed the only active shooter that was involved in the multiple shootings.

A subject (possibly 2) is currently driving around Odessa shooting at random people. At this time there are multiple gunshot victims. The suspect just hijacked a U.S. mail carrier truck and was last seen in the area of 38th and Walnut. Everyone is encouraged to get off the road and use extreme caution! All law enforcement is currently searching for the suspect and more information will be released as soon as it becomes available.

The Midland Police Department announced at 3:57 p.m. CT that shooters were suspected of being connect to two vehicles a gold/white small Toyota truck and a USPS postal van.

Update * We believe there are two shooters in two separate vehicles. One suspect is believed to be at the Cinergy in Midland and the other is believed to be driving on Loop 250 in Midland. The two vehicles in question are: gold/white small Toyota truck and a USPS Postal Van. Please stay away from these areas and stay indoors.

There are reports of an active shooter at the Home Depot in Odessa. For the safety of the public and law enforcement please stay away from the area and stay in your homes. We will update with more information as soon as possible.

At 5:29 p.m. CT Midland police announced that “the active shooter” was shot and killed at the Cinergy in Odessa, Texas — a large movie theater complex.

Early reports, unconfirmed by law enforcement, were propagated that 20 people were shot and five people were killed. Three law enforcement officers were reported to be shot or grazed. One of the shooting victims is reported to be a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper, one an Odessa police officer, and one a Midland police officer.
