After 14 years of service as the Arlington Heights Chief of Police and 42 years in law enforcement, Chief Gerald Mourning will be retiring on August 4, 2019. Chief Mourning is only the 5th Police Chief who has led the nearly 125-year-old Police Department.
Prior to serving as Arlington Heights Police Chief, Gerald Mourning served as Police Chief of West Chicago, Director of Safety for the Milwaukee Public Schools, Investigator with the St. Charles Police Department, and was a patrol officer with East Dundee.

According to the Village of Arlington Heights, during Chief Mourning’s tenure, the crime rate in Arlington Heights has reduced more than 58% and traffic crashes were reduced by 32%. The traffic statistics earned Arlington Heights state and national recognition for the department’s traffic safety programs.
Other key accomplishments during Chief Mourning’s leadership:
• Recently oversaw the transition to the new Police Station.
• Implementation of a strategic planning process that provides the department with the ability to meet the demands and challenges of the future.
• Introduced a Problem Oriented Policing philosophy that relies on targeted solutions based on the analysis of the characteristics of problems.
• Developed a Crisis Intervention Team to better respond to people with mental illness or behavioral disabilities.
• Implemented community outreach programs like Volunteers in Police Service, National Night Out and Citizen Police Academy.
• Added bicycle patrol and three canine units to enhance Patrol Division services.
The Village of Arlington Heights will begin a search for Chief Mourning’s successor immediately with the hope of having the next Chief identified prior to his departure in August.
