Palatine police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 10:43 p.m. Wednesday, March 20, 2019 to an activated fire alarm at Arlington Plating Company, 600 South Vermont Street in Palatine. The first Palatine Fire Department crew arrived on the scene at 10:47 p.m. Employees told firefighters on the scene that there was a fire in the building. The call was upgraded to a working fire response, and fire department crews made access to the building and found smoke and water inside, and determined that the automatic fire sprinkler system had activated. One sprinkler head from the fire sprinkler system had activated and controlled the fire, and firefighters completed extinguishment with one hose line. Other firefighters searched the building for any trapped occupants and performed support functions. The fire was declared under control at 11:01 p.m. Firefighters continued to ventilate smoke and fire gases and perform salvage, overhaul, and investigative activities into the early morning hours.

Arlington Plating Company is a metal finishing and anodizing company, according to their website.

One adult male civilian, who was injured in the fire, was treated by firefighter/paramedics and transported by Palatine Fire Department ambulance to Northwest Community Hospital. The injuries were initially believed to be non-life threatening injuries. No firefighters were injured.

The fire was contained to the area of origin within the facility. Damage estimates are not initially available, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The emergency response brought 25 firefighters staffing four engines, one ladder truck, three ambulances, and one rescue squad which responded to the scene along with two command officers and one fire investigator. Units from the Rolling Meadows and Palatine Rural Fire Departments were among the initial responders to the scene as part of an automatic aid agreement. An ambulance from the Long Grove Fire Protection District stood by in a Palatine Fire Station to assist with additional calls during this incident.
Palatine Police officers assisted occupants of the facility and provided traffic control.

One Palatine fire crew on a Quint was already out on a call, assisting Arlington Heights Fire Department with a serious house fire on Lasalle Street near Chestnut Avenue in Arlington Heights, just northwest of the intersection of Palatine Road and Arlington Heights Road.

NWS official weather data from Chicago O’Hare on March 20, 2019 recorded Winds NW at 7 MPH at 10:51 p.m. and NW 12 MPH at 11:51 p.m. Air temperature 40°F and 39°F respectively.

Palatine Fire Department reminded the public that automatic fire sprinklers are highly effective and reliable elements of a total fire protection system, reporting that when fire sprinklers are present, fires have been kept to the room of origin 97% of the time (U.S. Experience with Sprinklers, NFPA report, 2017). This fire is the second fire in Palatine in less than a week where a single sprinkler head controlled a fire, and is another excellent example of automatic fire sprinkler effectiveness.
