Chicago Fire: 1 Killed, 4 Hurt as Roofers Working on Parking Garage Roof at Hubbard St and Orleans St Involved with Roof Fire

Chicago firefighters and police responded about 1:23 p.m. Saturday December 29, 2018 to a report of a vehicle fire in a parking garage at Hubbard and Orleans, but actually workers on the roof lit the whole roof on fire while doing roof maintenance. Chicago Fire Department media reported at 2:12 p.m. that one person was killed at the fire scene.

A fire crew responding reported a lot of smoke visible from the north side of the parking garage. Initially — even to firefighters arriving on the scene — the fire looked like an auto fire on the top floor.

Battalion 1 reported discovering a burn victim by 1:29 pm — Ambulance 42 was assigned. Two more ambulances and Still and Box Alarm requested by 1:33 pm. The fire response was elevated to a Still and Box Alarm.

An EMS Plan 2 — bringing about 10 ambulances to the scene — was activated by a Deputy District Chief (2-2-1) by 1:44 p.m. A Mass Casualty unit was also assigned to the scene, but have only been assigned as a precaution. The EMS multiple casualty units (Mass Casualty Unit 8-8-19 and EMS Transport Bus 8-8-12) were held up and returned to quarters by 2:02 p.m.

An initial summary by fire command at the scene reported 5 burn victims that were in the process of being removed from the scene.

The fire was extinguished before 1:55 p.m.
