By 9:37 a.m. Wauconda fire command requested a MABAS Division 4 Box Alarm on Box #34-40 for a hazmat incident involving a chlorine leak at the public works facility.
WIND NE 8 G 17 MPH at 8:55 a.m. at Chicago/Waukegan Regional Airport.
Wauconda Grade School and Wauconda Middle School are located just east of the public works facility. Winds were blowing from the northeast to the southwest at the time of the incident.
Wauconda and mutual aid crews are on the scene of a chlorine leak at Wauconda Public Works. The area has been blocked off and secured. There is no immediate hazard to either of the adjacent schools. School administration staff has been advised for their students to stay inside until the incident has been mitigated. We will be on scene for a while.
The MABAS Box Alarm was struck out about 11:42 a.m.
Wauconda’s Water Reclamation Facility is located at the Slocum Lake Road address. Initially it was not confirmed whether the chlorine leak is directly connected to the Water Reclamation facility.
Wauconda’s website does not describe chlorine being involved with the water reclamation process, but does describe Ferric Chloride being added to wastewater to bond with Phosphorus for the removal of Phosphorus from the wastewater. Phosphorus in wastewater can cause excessive plant growth in water, and decrease water quality and oxygen for fish and other water life populations.
Wauconda’s Water Reclamation Facility prevents waste materials generated by residents and businesses from entering the environment.
According to Wauconda’s official website, the facility is required to meet standards put in place by the Illinois EPA and the US EPA on a number of parameters that are tested daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, semi-annually and annually.
The treatment process protects the receiving waters — Fiddle Creek and the Fox River — where the facility discharges the treated water.
