‘Suspicious’ Precautions Taken for Suitcase Left on Metra Train in Harvard

Harvard Fire Protection District firefighters and Harvard responded about 8:00 p.m. Friday to a report of a suitcase that was suspicious because it was left unattended and unclaimed on a train.

Harvard police and firefighters requested a bomb squad unit from St. Charles to check the suitcase, and passengers exited Metra train #662 as a precaution. The scene was cleared at about 12:10 Saturday. No details were immediately released regarding the finding of the suitcase or the contents of the suitcase. The bomb squad was presumably the Kane County Sheriff’s Bomb Unit.

The Harvard Metra station, located in McHenry County near the state border with Wisconsin, is the most remote station on the Metra/Union Pacific Northwest Line. Train #662 is the last weeknight train on the schedule to depart from Harvard on the Northwest Line. When on time, the train is scheduled to depart from Harvard at 8:35 p.m. and arrive in Chicago at 10:23 p.m.

Metra announced restrictions and limited schedule changes Friday. Most changes are in the area of McCormick Place and affect the Metra Electric Line and Blue Island branch line. See details …
