Driver Trapped, Rescued in Crash with Semi-Trailer Truck on Route 41 and Old Elm Rd Lake Forest

Lake Forest police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 10:06 p.m. Friday August 17, 2018 to a report of a serious crash involving a passenger vehicle and a semi-trailer truck.

One person was seriously injured in the passenger car involved in the crash with the semi-trailer truck near Route 41 and Old Elm Road in Lake Forest. The emergency call was upgraded to a General Alarm for fire station coverage at 10:17 p.m. A medical transport helicopter was requested about 10:20 p.m. Flight for Life was not available, and Lifestar was dispatched by about 10:32 p.m. with a 32 minute ETA. A third ambulance was requested by 10:22 p.m. to check the truck driver.

Police and firefighters found a vehicle wedged underneath the semi-trailer, with fire in the engine compartment. Police officers, arrived first, and used fire extinguishers to keep the fire from spreading to the female driver, who was the only person in the vehicle, and was entrapped in the vehicle. Patient care was underway during extrication.

The female driver was extricated while an engine crew stood by with a hose line in case the fire re-ignited. The patient was extricated from the vehicle by 11:16 p.m. and was flown via Flight for Life helicopter to Level I Trauma Center Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, where she was listed in serious condition with multiple injuries. The driver of the semi-trailer truck was not injured.

Route 41 was closed in both directions for rescue operations and to allow the helicopter to use a landing zone on Route 41.

Lake Forest Police Department is investigating the crash. Deerfield-Bannockburn, Highland Park and Northbrook fire departments assisted Lake Forest Fire Department.
