VIDEO: Transport of escaped prisoner who was shot near the Route 53/Algonquin Road interchange after he escaped from a police car that was northbound on the expressway.
An Elgin police officer is reported to be the police officer involved in a shooting of an escaped prisoner that occurred on Route 53 over Algonquin Road Saturday morning about 8:11 a.m. Police have not revealed how many shots were fired or where on the body the prisoner was shot. Neighbors northeast of the interchange where the incident occurred reported hearing three shots that were loud. Information on the suspect’s condition was not released, but he was transported to Level I Trauma Center Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, instead of the closest hospital Level II Trauma Center Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights.
Police were apparently transporting two suspects to bond court at Cook County Circuit Court Rolling Meadows, when one of the suspects kicked out a window of the squad car, either jumped or somehow got out of the vehicle. The suspect had outstanding warrants, including driving with a license revoked, and fleeing and eluding police in Boone County.
The second prisoner apparently did not try to escape, but this has not been confirmed by the police. The police officer was the only law officer in the car.
Police were investigating the area much of the day. The Illinois State Police are conducting two investigations — one involving the shooting, and one involving the prisoner’s actions and escape.
Police officers from Arlington Heights, Rolling Meadows, Schaumburg, the Illinois State Police, and Cook County Sheriff were on the scene.
