Des Plaines alerted area police departments of multiple vehicle fires set about 9:30 p.m. Sunday. First two vehicle fires were reported set at 140 West Northwest Highway, and then 440 Simone Drive in Des Plaines near Rand Road and Wolf Road. A fifth fire was reported at 9 North Forest (Des Plaines/Mt. Prospect?). Four to five male teen occupants (later reported as driver and three male teenagers) were reported in the vehicle. The offenders were reported to be using an accelerant on a napkin or piece of paper and placing the paper under the windshield wipers. Some fires were reported under the hood of the vehicles.
The offenders’ vehicle is reported to be a large red newer model SUV with black on the vehicle. The vehicle was last seen northbound on North 3rd Avenue near Golf Road and then on Golf Road — unknown direction of travel. The teens are suspects in a total of five vehicle arson cases in Des Plaines that occurred Sunday night. All five victim vehicles were totally engulfed in flames.
