Tristan Shambee Pronounced Dead After Extra Alarm Water Rescue at Gillson Park, Lake Ave, Wilmette Beach

Tristan Shambee, 14, of Evanston, was pronounced dead at 7:36 p.m. at Northshore Universty Health System Evanston Hospital, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office after a water rescue effort at Gillson Park Beach in Wilmette.

Wilmette Fire Department responded about 5:11 p.m. Saturday to a water rescue at Gillson Park Beach, 101 Lake Avenue, Wilmette after two friends reported him missing while swimming. Wilmette responded with divers, Glenview responded with divers, Glencoe responded with divers and a boat, and Evanston responded with divers and a jet ski. Special Chicago Fire Department helicopter, U.S. Coast Guard called to the scene as Chicago Fire Department helicopter was not immediately available, MABAS Division 3 Decon and underwater sidescan sonar also responded the scene. Chicago Fire Department helicopter responded for reconnaissance after refueling from a rescue operation near the breakwater east of Navy Pier at about 5:00 p.m.

A male was pulled from the water about 7:00 p.m. Saturday. Witnesses report CPR was performed as the victim was transferred to an awaiting ambulance.

A box alarm was transmitted for all Division 3 divers at 5:48 p.m. Saturday. Prospect Heights divers and all Division 3 divers, including rescuers from Deerfield-Bannockburn, Northbrook, Park Ridge and Skokie also responded.


Waves were choppy. Tristan Shambee was reported missing presumably under water about 15 minutes, as firefighter divers and rescuers assembled at the scene. A Rip Current Statement was issued for the weekend, updated to high risk of rip currents for the Cook County Illinois shore and Indiana shore, and moderate risk for Lake County, Illinois shore.

Air temperature 72.6°F, winds calm, skies clear at the time of the incident.
