The National Football League Players Association (NFLPA) has filed to dissolve their union — decertify. The NFLPA is expected to file an antitrust lawsuit against the NFL in Minnesota federal court, the same court which Judge Doty presides over. The decertification of the NFLPA will result in the NFL’s owners locking out the players, preventing all off-season training activities, mini-camps, and training camps from occurring.
The labor situation now goes to court, and for the first time since 1987, there is a work stoppage in the NFL.
At 5:00 p.m. EST on March 11, 2011, the NFLPA decertified when the NFL failed to open 10 years worth of team financial records. Players union representatives walked out on talks after the owners’ refusal to give them the ability to look over 10 years worth of financial information.
Disbanding the union allows the players to sue if the players are locked out by the NFL team owners.
