Somali pirates hijacked the Saudi-owned oil supertanker MV Sirius Star about 450 nautical miles southeast of Mombasa, Kenya and are moving the ship toward a port near the town of Eyl, Somalia, which is a common haven of pirates and their stolen ships.

The hijacking of the ship, which was sailing under a Liberian flag with a 25-member crew (with citizens of Croatia, Britain, the Philippines, Poland and Saudi Arabia), was the most remote of any hijacking to date.

The MV Sirius Star (owned by Aramco and commissioned in March 2008) is 1,080 feet long and can carry about 2 million barrels of oil. The tanker was known to be carrying oil, but the quantity is unknown.
