Russian Fleet Heads to Venezuela

The first shots Peter the Great and Admiral Chabonenko go to coast of South America.

The nuclear-powered Peter the Great cruiser is accompanied by three other ships, which sailed from the Northern Fleet’s base of Severomorsk on Monday, September 22, 2008. The ships will cover about 15,000 nautical miles to conduct joint maneuvers with the Venezuelan navy.

According to DEBKAfile’s military sources, it consists of six to eight vessels:
Kirov Class (Type 1144.2) Peter the Great nuclear-powered heavy missile cruiser, one of the largest warships in the world. Armed with the Granit (NATO designated SS-N-19 Shipwreck) long range, anti-ship missile system, consisting of 20 missiles. Also equipped with 40 S-300F air defense missiles.

Pyotr Velikiy, a guided nuclear missile cruiser

Flotilla escorted by five smaller warships and a fuel vessel

The group of Russian warships are due to visit Caracas on November 24-30.
